Tesla’s six-seat Model Y L cleared for Australian roads as Fremont-only Model X heads for sunset in ~2 months

Tesla has secured approval from Australia’s Road Vehicle Regulator for its Model Y L variant — a stretched, six-passenger version of the popular electric SUV with a longer wheel base..

The dual-motor all-wheel-drive model (variant code YL5NDB) appeared in government documents on February 23, 2026. This marks the first time the longer Model Y has been approved outside China and South Korea.

The timing is especially significant: Tesla’s larger flagship Model X — built exclusively at the Fremont factory — is being sunsetted in about two months, with production scheduled to end in Q2 2026.

Extended design adds space without Model X price

The Model Y L stretches to 4,969 mm in length with a 3,040 mm wheelbase — 219 mm longer overall than the standard Model Y.

It offers noticeably improved third-row legroom in a practical 2-2-2 seating layout, targeting families who need six seats but want the Model Y’s more compact footprint, lower price, higher efficiency and easier parking compared with the soon-to-be-discontinued Model X.

Key specs include a 2,651 kg gross vehicle mass and 1,588 kg braked towing capacity, all built on the refreshed Model Y platform with updated styling.

International expansion ramps up

South Korea certified the Model Y L in mid-January 2026, with a 553 km range rating and sales launch imminent. Australia’s approval positions it as the next market, though Tesla has not yet announced local pricing or order dates.

With the Fremont-only Model X winding down, the rapid global rollout of the more affordable and higher-volume Model Y L ensures Tesla continues to serve the six-seat family SUV segment worldwide. Similar approvals are expected to follow in additional regions.
