It’s early Wednesday evening and the performing arts center at Westlake High School near Austin is filled with excited people for the pinning ceremony to commission nine police officers  The ceremony is in concert with the first use of 9 Model Y police cars. 

In Texas, the law that makes an officer mandatory in each school is House Bill 3 (HB 3), which was passed in 2023 following the tragic shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. This law requires every school district to have at least one armed officer on every campus.

Eanes ISD Police Department Purchases Tesla Model Y Cars for Enhanced Campus Safety

(Austin, Texas) In a move towards increased campus safety, Eanes Independent School District (ISD) Police Department in Austin, Texas, has recently taken delivery of a fleet of nine Tesla Model Y police cars. This decision comes in the wake of the tragic shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, which led to the passage of House Bill 3 (HB 3) in 2023, mandating the presence of an armed officer on every campus.

The Eanes ISD Police Department, led by Director Matt Greer, was formed from scratch, with a focus on recruiting experienced officers. The department’s commitment to safety extends beyond the school grounds. I spoke with James Spradley, President of the Board of Trustees, who informed me the Tesla vehicles will be “parked in front of each school during school hours and driven home by the assigned officers at night,” this serves as a visible deterrent and symbol of security in the Westlake community.

The decision to choose Tesla as the official vehicle supplier for the department was made based on a competitive bidding process. Tesla’s cost-effective proposal, outbidding other car manufacturers by a big margin, made Model Y the clear choice. Another Model Y police car advantage is Tesla’s Sentry Guard system, providing enhanced monitoring and safety for the students, staff, officers and the community.

One Model Y in the new fleet of Tesla police cars was unveiled during the pinning ceremony, attended by the Eanes ISD Police Department’s 11 officers. The event was graced by the presence of Interim Chief of Police Robin Henderson and Board of Trustees President James Spradley, who emphasized the importance of the new department. 

This collaboration between Eanes ISD and Tesla marks a significant step towards safer schools and communities, as well as a commitment to sustainability and innovation in law enforcement. As the officers of the Eanes ISD Police Department embark on their new journey, the community can rest assured that they are in good hands.
