Steps to Buying a Tesla

There’s a lot of talk about whether someone should make their next car a Tesla. I’m like you in that I work hard for my paycheck, and there are few products I have purchased that truly give me Joy!

My Tesla is one of them!

I’m sharing my experience of buying a Tesla with you and walking with you through the steps.

FIRST DRIVE

The deciding factor for me was the demo drive. Tesla gave me a demo car on a Saturday morning after a nightfall of rain. The roads were sparkling and the car was pristine and I accelerated up a steep hill and around curves while the car held onto the road like rails. I had to adjust back to my combustion car after that and I missed the Tesla so much.

REASONS A TESLA MAKES SENSE

I wanted a Tesla, and I had to sell my husband on it because he wanted to wait.

I emphasized to him how Tesla rates #1 in Safety and Aces all the crash tests.

I told him how little we would pay to power the Tesla – about $6 – $12 at the Tesla Superchargers and only about $30 a month to charge at night at home.

I also let him know about destination charging for when we travel. Destination chargers let you slow charge for free at many hotels overnight.

HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO GET YOUR TESLA?

I suggest you order your Tesla on the premise that you will take delivery in one week. When I got my finances in order (I used a credit union, and Tesla also has a finance option), I went ahead and placed a new order for a Model Y.  Ours was delivered a month later.  I have heard that ordering a Model Y 7-Seater SUV may take longer (see image above) but is well worth the wait!

My friend recently ordered a Model 3 and Tesla scheduled delivery for the next week.  Delivery times vary, and the important part is that you are ready with your financing, and trade-in and have planned out your charging routine ahead of time.

TESLA WILL LET YOU TRADE IN YOUR OLD GAS CAR

Tesla will take your old gas car off your hands.

When you place your order for your Tesla, they will ask you if you have a vehicle to trade in.

My best advice is for you to compare Tesla’s offer to another car buyer’s offer.  You can go with the highest bidder.

TESLA’S EASY TASK LIST IS MADE FOR YOU

When I ordered my Tesla, I received “tasks” from Tesla to complete in stages.

Tesla does their best to make this painless and it is worth having 1) finances prepared ahead of time and 2) how you’ll insure the vehicle planned out.  I recommend Tesla insurance as you can opt into it right from the Tesla App and their rates are usually lower.  It activates right away and you can change out of it later if you have to.

RECEIVING THE BEAUTIFUL VEHICLE, FINAL STEPS

As a Texas resident, I went to the County Tax office to pay the taxes on the vehicle. The Tax Office held the license plate for the Tesla until I was paid up (this was in Oct. 2022 and may change).

It is hard to explain how awesome it feels to own a Tesla!  It seems almost too good to be true!

In a future article, I’ll write about getting to know your Tesla. It took me a while to get fully comfortable with my Tesla because it is very different from a combustion car!

  1. Going to be 5 or 10 years before electric vehicles are worth it in my opinion. All the issues in the article and comments will be sorted out in time. Eventually you will have competing repair options and Tesla won’t be able to be so intrusive. They are still in infancy. For me I’ll buy one more new gas car then see where electric cats are at. The only 2 things I don’t know how they will fix is high insurance costs and using a lot of tires. Nearly every electric car in an accident is totaled by insurance. The batteries are so heavy that tires don’t last.

  2. I own 4 Teslas. A couple of tips: Make sure you opt out of forced arbitration. Otherwise you can’t sue if you get a lemon. And there are a LOT of lemons. Next – Tesla won’t collect tax online unless your state requires it (Texas doesn’t). So the price shown isn’t “out the door” like a dealership is. Don’t get shafted with a huge tax bill when you go to register your car! Third – software updates are sneaky. Beware as Tesla can shut off your charging or disable updates if you DO need to sue or arbitrate. You have zero rights to charging or updates if you pi$$ Tesla off. Last – Tesla monitors and logs EVERYTHING. So if you plug in some kind of aftermarket accessory like those button things or a monitoring app that lets you see vehicle and battery details, they can use that, too, to deny you warranty coverage. Tesla isn’t a “nice” company if things get tense. Musk doesn’t care about you is the way you need to think about it.

    • If you had so many issues, why did you buy FOUR Teslas. That doesn’t add up.

We’ve had exactly one Tesla, a Model 3 LR, for 3 years and love it! We had one issue – the truck latch failed – and they actually came to our house to repair it at no charge.

Drive what you love, of course. We’re happy with our Model 3 this far!

  3. I feel like this article is way too biased to the thought of owning a tesla instead of actually highlighting benefits of owning one. I’ve been tempted but the build quality and the fact that I’m not allowed to work on the car without voiding the warranties is what keeps me from buying at this time.

    • The build on 3 and Y is so-so. It’s decent compared to similar cars. And not only can you not work on the car, Tesla can pretty much charge you WHATEVER they want for repairs once the warranty expires and you have no choice but to pay as there aren’t competing dealerships.

  4. The first step you want to do is never buy a Tesla or any type of car that’s battery powered unless of course your interested in spontaneous combustion n burning down your house n paying up to 75 percent higher insurance rates! Battery powered vehicles are just a death trap waiting to happen!

    • EVs catch fire 20x less per million miles compared to a gasoline car, and lithium fires spread much more slowly than gasoline fires making them much more survivable. EV fires are harder to extinguish, though.

Insurance rates may be somewhat higher because insurance companies lack cheap aftermarket parts from China with which to minimize your repair costs.

    • So with hundreds of thousands of Teslas out there, you’d think this would be in the news every day and half the expensive neighborhoods would be burned down. Thursday is just a silly concern. I’ve had mine 5 years and still have my house. Just bought my wife her second one. Huh…no flames yet.
